Registered Psychotherapist

Nancy received her bachelor’s degree from York University in 2005 and went on to complete her masters in counselling psychology from Adler University in Chicago. Ms. Amirkhanian also obtained a diploma as an Addictions Case Worker from McMaster University. She is a member of the College for Registered Psychotherapists.  

Nancy has worked in both outpatient and inpatient hospital settings providing both group and individual psychotherapy. Early in her career, Nancy worked as a rehabilitation consultant working with individuals who have been involved in motor vehicle accidents, including those who have suffered acquired brain injuries. The primary focus of her work has been with adults and couples. Her previous work experience also includes a background knowledge in working with a variety of issues, such as depression / anxiety, trauma, addictions, anger management, pain management, and psychotic disorders. Nancy is also experienced in working with couples struggling with communication, conflict, intimacy, transitioning into a blended family, and / or navigating separation / divorce. In the past, Ms. Amirkhanian has also taught addictions counselling courses at the post-secondary level.  

Nancy seeks to create a safe, supportive, and caring environment to explore life’s stresses and challenges. Her collaborative and non-judgmental approach seeks to establish a strong working alliance with clients who are striving to meet their therapeutic goals. She tailors her approach to meet the specific needs of her clients by increasing their awareness regarding the unique factors that underlie their struggles and assist them in moving towards change. She integrates a number of therapeutic approaches to support emotional wellbeing and increased coping, including Cognitive Behavioural (CBT).

When she is not working, Nancy enjoys engaging in various fitness activities, spending time with friends and family, and travelling.
